Weather Maps, Third Edition. How to Read and Interpret All the Basic Weather Charts by Peter R. Chaston.

From the man whose job is to teach forecasters HOW to forecast! Pete Chaston, formerly a Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service. Some of this book is technical, and some is a fairly easy read. Either way, once you've read it, you will be a better forecaster than most on-air television meteorologists right off the bat. A whole section devoted to forecasting including thunderstorms and the "magic chart" for snowfall amounts. Warm Advection, and vorticity are discussed, along with severe storm signatures in satellite photographs and radar. A "must have" if you are serious about the weather. I recommend reading Weather Basics first then this.

I wish this book existed when I was young. It is everything, and I mean everything anyone interested in weather should know from the start. Comprehensive, easy to read, and yet good enough to be a textbook from middle school through college courses. This is the first book I would recommend for ANYONE interested in weather as a hobby period. Written by expert forecasters Pete Chaston, and Joseph Balsama, a long-time science educator. Most of it is written in laymen's terms, and yet there is extremely comprehensive chart discussion that is crucial to excellent severe storm forecasting.
